Cooperative Learning and Student's Achievement

Cooperative learning helps to raise achievement of students, build a positive relationships among students, which is important for creating a learning community that values diversity. In addition, it provides experiences that develop both good learning skills and social skills. Research shows cooperative learning helps to produce higher achievement, increased retention, more positive relationships and a wider circle of friends, also it increases self esteem, greater social support. for example, if students are working toward a common goal, academic work becomes an activity valued by peers, students become more motivated to help one another to learn; if a student need  any help, his /her partner explain to him certain idea and this will strengthen their own learning.

  1. For me, I like cooperative learning very much, and if I'm asked to do a project alone or in a group, I will choose group work. In addition to all what you mentioned, in cooperative learning, we can share our ideas together, we can help each other. When we succeed we will succeed as one group, all of the members in a group should work together and equally, here comes the role of the teacher in dividing students properly, heterogeneously and dividing the tasks between them.

  3. team work is a real key player in education specially when we want students to learn how to socialize with each other, unfortunately cooperative learning is not exactly applied correctly in our schools, the idea is not based grouping children with each other mainly for academic reasons, it's not easy for students to work together if they're not familiar with each other, teachers don't pay attention to this important idea, and that's just one of many.

  4. The funny thing is despite its importance, it's not used as it should be. I've never seen a teacher doing a cooperative lesson properly!

  7. If you come to compare the students' achievement when working alone and during cooperative learning, we will find that their achievement increases more during cooperative learning. It has lots of advantages, the group is one spirit, and students will be working hardly because they are all responsible for the final results. I will be applying it in my classroom due to its advantages.
